2017 Jeep® Compass Awarded IIHS Top Safety Pick for 2017

December 12th, 2017 by

Every year the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety performs a series of tests on every make and model, as well as other vehicle safety devises such as child seats and restraints. This year, the 2017 Jeep® Compass earned the Top Safety Pick for its 70+ available safety and security features. With a “Good” rating in each of the five IIHS crashworthiness tests, the 2017 Jeep® Compass also earns a “Superior” rating for its newest technology.

The Compass’s Safety Highlights
Every great vehicle must start with a solid foundation. The all-new 2017 Jeep Compass is a shining example of this, with 65% of its body and frame being constructed from High-strength steel. This achievement goes hand in hand with Jeep’s latest innovative safety technology such as the Automatic Emergency Braking. The IIHS “superior” rating was awarded to the 2017 Jeep Compass because of the sensor-fusion technology which allows for the Full-speed Forward Collision Warning system.

“Sensor-fusion combines the attributes of radar technology and cameras, while most competitive systems use one or the other,” said Mark Chernoby, Chief Technical Compliance Officer of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V. When paired with the seven standard-equipment airbags, and the other 70 safety and security features, this extremely capable compact SUV becomes a safe haven for you and yours.

IIHS Safety Testing
The IIHS, Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, focuses on testing two components of vehicle safety. First is crashworthiness. This includes how well the vehicle protects its passengers, and ratings range from good, to acceptable, to marginal, or poor. These tests cover 6 major areas: driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints. Second is crash avoidance and mitigation. This includes any technology that can prevent a crash or lessen its severity. These ratings range from basic, to advanced, or superior.

The 2017 Jeep Compass scored “good” ratings in tests that measure side impact with a large SUV or pickup truck, a moderate-offset frontal impact, a small-offset frontal impact, roof-deformation consistent with a rollover, and a rear collision capable of inducing whiplash. The 2017 Jeep® Compass took a superior crash avoidance and mitigation rating, as did several others from FCA US.
